I, Neil Scheid, learned to travel in the back of the split window Beetle. That was necessary until dad bought our first VW Microbus in 1956. That was the same year that my dad became the president of the VW Club of America. Over the next period of my life, I have had many, many VWs of various types – mostly Bugs and Buses. In the late 1960s, I helped my friend Slim build his old 1964 or 1965 Bug into a Dune Buggy. I lost track of Slim over the years until about 2 years ago when I was visiting Seattle, Wash. with my family. I remembered that Slim had moved there after college. I wondered: Was Slim alive? Was he still out there building VWs?
